Saengerbund Awards - A German Vocal Competition

A contest for the support, development and preservation of German Singing.

Limited to young adults aged 21-30.
Repertoire from opera, oratorio, German operetta, Lieder or folk song
will be presented at the finals in a concert on January 19, 2019 at 7:30 PM
at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1311 Holman St., Houston, Texas 77004.

Past judges have included casting directors and conductors from the Metropolitan Opera, Houston Grand Opera, and other regional symphony and opera companies.


Past winners of the Saengerbund Awards have appeared with major companies throughout the USA and Europe, including the Met, San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, Wolf Trap, Santa Fe, Glyndebourne, and the Paris Opera.


We will be open for submissions between
August 1 and November 15, 2018

Rules of competition

  1. Singers must be at least 21 years of age and no older than 30 on January 19, 2019.
    Entrants will provide proof of age at the time of the preliminary audition.
    Entrants must have a Social Security Number.
  2. Participants may not be under professional artist management.
  3. Participants must not have performed a leading role with a professional opera company.
  4. There is a $20 entry fee payable via credit/debit/PayPal at the time the application is submitted.
  5. For the preliminary audition singers should perform a 2-minute excerpt from one of the selections listed in item #9.
    Standard repertoire is recommended. The selection must be accompanied. No unaccompanied selections will be considered.
  6. Singers will be evaluated on vocal quality, German diction, showmanship, and the strength of the selections.
    The quality of the recording is also of critical importance.
  7. Semi-finalists will be notified by December 1. All documents are due by December 10, 2018.
    Include photo, resume, proof of age, signed publicity release, and softcopy of the full text of your selections.
    Please be sure you are available for both the semi-final and Final Concert before submitting materials!
  8. The semi-final round will be conducted on Friday, January 18, 2019 beginning at 2:30 PM.
  9. For the semi-final round, singers should be prepared to sing three selections:
    1. A German Lied from the standard repertoire.
    2. A selection in German from opera, oratorio or operetta.
      This selection can be a German translation from a work by a non-German composer.
    3. A third selection from any source, sung in German.
  10. A professional accompanist will be provided for the semi-final audition and the Final Concert;
    for the semi-final round only, singers may bring their own accompanists if they so choose.
  11. If selected for the Final Concert on January 19, 2019, singers will appear in formal concert dress.
    Men: tuxedos. Women: formal gowns.
  12. Singers selected for the final concert shall agree to appear in promotional materials.
  13. Overnight housing will be provided for out-of-town finalists if requested in advance.
  14. Video entries should be sent to Deadline: November 15, 2018.
  15. All finalists will receive a cash award of at least $800.
